Finding Peace on the Trails: How Running at Rosewood Inspires Me
By Nico Dillman
Every day after work, around 4:00 or 4:30, I lace up my running shoes and head to the trails at the Rosewood Nature Study Area. This daily ritual has become one of the most grounding and fulfilling parts of my day. It’s not just about exercise—it’s a way to decompress, reconnect with nature, and find clarity amidst the hustle and bustle of life.
Running at Rosewood gives me the exercise I need to feel healthy, but it goes far beyond physical fitness. Spending time outdoors after a day of work reminds me of why I chose a career focused on environmental stewardship. There’s something deeply satisfying about immersing myself in the very ecosystem I work to protect. As I run past wetlands alive with wildlife, I feel a sense of harmony, as if I’m not just running in nature but running with it. It’s moments like these that make me feel “one with nature.”
On days when work feels especially stressful or overwhelming, my runs serve as a much-needed escape. It’s not always about maintaining a specific pace or distance. Sometimes, it’s just about moving my body, clearing my mind, and finding peace. The flat trails at Rosewood are perfect for this—they allow me to run without worrying about hills that might disrupt my rhythm. There’s a meditative quality to these runs: the steady beat of my footsteps, the soft breeze carrying the scent of the wetlands, and the open expanse of greenspace all work together to calm my mind and lift my spirit.
One of the things I love most about Rosewood is its simplicity and accessibility. Unlike mountain trails that require a long drive, especially during the winter months, Rosewood offers the perfect escape right in the city. I don’t have to navigate crowded streets, wait for stoplights, or weave around pedestrians. Instead, I can step onto a quiet trail that feels far removed from the urban noise. It’s a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively—that I look forward to every day.
Rosewood’s trails offer something for everyone. I’ve explored all three loops and enjoy switching them up depending on my mood and energy level. There’s the Bunny Loop, a 0.5-mile circuit on the east side that’s great for a quick run or warm-up. The Medium Loop, a 1 to 1.5-mile circuit on the east side, takes you under a bridge and offers a mix of views and terrains.
Then there’s the Entire Loop, a 2.5 to 3-mile path (which you can start on either the east or west side) that encircles the whole property. This is my favorite route, as it offers sweeping views of the wetlands and the chance to see wildlife going about their day.
In a city like Reno, where accessible running spots can be hard to find, Rosewood is a hidden gem. The trails here provide the perfect balance of solitude, scenery, and space to stretch my legs and my thoughts. Whether I’m running to stay fit, clear my head, or simply immerse myself in nature, Rosewood Nature Study Area never fails to inspire me. It’s more than just a place to run—it’s a sanctuary that keeps me grounded and reminds me of the beauty and importance of the natural world.
So, if you’re ever looking for a peaceful spot to run or walk, I highly recommend Rosewood. You might just find the same sense of calm and connection that I do every day.

Nico,
I am so glad there are young people (such as yourself) that can find grounding in the outdoors. It is my refuge as well, and has been for many years. Your post is inspirational and thought provoking,. Thank you.
