Event Recap: A Successful Fall Planting at Rosewood Nature Study Area

by: Jennie Johnson

This past weekend, we were thrilled to welcome 83 dedicated volunteers to the Rosewood Nature Study Area for our fall planting event! With the goal of restoring our wetlands and helping native species thrive, this event was a great success, thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of our community.

Volunteers planted a variety of native upland and riparian species throughout the area. These plants are essential for stabilizing stream banks, reducing invasive species, and supporting local wildlife. By introducing more native plants to the Rosewood wetlands, we continue our mission of restoring this unique ecosystem and cultivating a great space for public use. Even Peavine Pete's outdoor enclosure got a small update for Desert Tortoise Week!

If you missed out on this planting event, don’t worry! You’ll have another chance to participate in the annual Spring Plantapalooza. Planting events like this happen twice a year; once in the spring and once in the fall. Whether you’re looking to get involved as an individual or your business is interested in sponsoring or volunteering as a group, there’s always a way to make an impact.

The fall planting event was truly a beautiful day with perfect weather, ideal for capturing the beauty of the season. And speaking of capturing beauty, don’t forget to enter the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) Fall Photo Challenge! The challenge kicked off on October 4th and runs through October 25th. We encourage everyone to get outdoors and photograph the stunning landscapes and wildlife in our local parks. Whether you're snapping a scenic landscape or catching wildlife in action, there’s beauty all around. Categories include Wildlife, Landscape, Comedy, and Youth (under 18), so there’s something for everyone. Be sure to share your fall photos with us!

We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout at this weekend’s event, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us. Your support helps us continue our work in restoring wetlands and creating a healthier environment for the community. If your business is interested in sponsoring or volunteering at our future planting events, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can continue making a difference for the Rosewood Nature Study Area and beyond.

Finally, if you're ready to get involved again, we invite you to join us for the next volunteer opportunity, TMT Trail Days! Help us assist Washoe County Parks and Biggest Little Trail Stewardship in improving trail conditions throughout the Truckee Meadows. Volunteers will use hand tools to cut and haul vegetation, improve trail surfaces with gravel, and plant willow cuttings to stabilize riverbanks. It’s a great way to make a positive impact on the environment while enjoying some fresh air and camaraderie. Our next TMT Trail Day will take place at McCarran Ranch Preserve HQ (501 McCarran Ranch Road, Sparks, NV 89434), where we'll carpool a short distance to the staging area. From there, it's just a flat 1/4 mile walk to the work site. Registration is required so sign up here.

We look forward to seeing you out on the trails and in the parks this fall!

It’s wonderful to see communities coming together for conservation efforts! Just like digital birthday cards help us stay connected and celebrate special moments, initiatives like this bring people closer to nature and create lasting positive impacts. Great job to everyone involved!
