Jumping Into Summer Camp
As May comes to a close we here at the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation are gearing up to putting on an exciting Summer Break Camp. We have all sorts of activities and science experiments planned out over the eight weeks of summer. We believe that a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) education is an important, well rounded way for your students to stay sharp over the summer months and get ahead for their next school year.

June 11th through the 15th our theme is “Healthy Habitats” where we will be learning about where things live. We will cover different habitats such as deserts, meadows, and rangelands culminating in building our own habitats based on what we learned through the week.

June 18th through the 22nd will focus on “Backyard Birds.” Throughout the week we will focus on the origins of birds, how they fly, and the vast variety of birds in our area.

June 25th through the 29th is about plants and their “Mighty Pollinators.” This week will focus on different types of pollinators and how the process of pollination affects the world around us.

July 2nd through the 6th is “Art in Nature” which is the week I am personally most excited for. We will be exploring patterns in nature, unique uses of plants, the art in animals, and art hanging in trees.

July 9th through the 13th is “Fish Out of Water.” On our first day of this week will be looking at the water quality and how to perform different tests to learn about the Truckee River. We will also be going over macroinvertebrates that live on the water, learn about different fish types, and even learn different fishing techniques.

July 16th through the 20th we will be busting myths in “Mythbusters: Disasters.” Probably the most high octane week of camp, we will be going over Superstorms, wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and volcanoes.

July 23rd through the 27th we will be rocking out while we learn about “Rolling Stones.” Over the week we will discuss the lifecycle that rocks go through, the different common rock types, and we will be taking a closer look at crystals and gems.

July 30th through August 3rd is our final week of camp where we will learn about “Predators: Not Just the Bad Guys.” Kicking off predators week we will delve into the different types of predators that are native to our area. Following days will go over different characteristics of predators, “Tiny Terrors,” birds of prey, and why predators do what they do.
We had such a great time over Spring Break Camp that we can’t wait for Summer Camp to begin and we hope to see you here!
