Summary

This AmeriCorps member will assist with developing and implementing the Student Stewards Outdoor STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) camps for economically disadvantaged students and participate in our youth recreation opportunities, including our partnership with Burton’s CHILL Foundation.

Position Description

As an AmeriCorps member in the Youth Nutrition Education role, you will assist with planning, implementing, and facilitating various youth outdoor camps and programs, emphasizing nutrition and incorporating healthy food options into camp lunches. Your role will help ensure that the students in our programs learn about science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) in outdoor settings and develop a positive relationship with nutritious foods that promote healthy lifestyles.

This role will include working directly with campers, assisting with camp logistics, supporting field trips, and collaborating with local partners to integrate the Healthy Parks, Healthy People grant’s vision of healthier communities through outdoor engagement and more nutritious meals.

Primary Responsibilities

Develop and Integrate Healthy Camp Lunches:

  • Work with the Camps and Recreation Manager to design and implement healthy meal plans and snacks for camp participants.

  • Ensure that meals meet nutritional standards and are culturally appropriate, focusing on increasing access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and balanced meals.

  • Educate campers about nutrition and healthy eating habits through hands-on cooking demonstrations or food-related activities.

  • Collaborate with local farms, food banks, or community organizations to source nutritious food for camps.

Lead and Facilitate Outdoor STEAM Camps:

  • Assist in developing an age-appropriate STEAM-based curriculum for youth camps, integrating outdoor activities with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math education.

  • Facilitate engaging outdoor lessons and activities that foster teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking.

  • Supervise and guide youth during camp sessions, ensuring their safety and well-being.

  • Lead hands-on activities that connect outdoor recreation with learning about nature, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.

Support Youth Recreation Programs:

  • Assist with coordinating the Burton’s CHILL Foundation partnership, which offers underserved youth the chance to try board sports such as snowboarding, skateboarding, and wake surfing.

  • Support the development of new outdoor recreation opportunities and help lead field trips, activities, and community events that promote active living.

Community Outreach and Engagement:

  • Participate in community outreach efforts to increase awareness of TMPF’s programs and recruit participants.

  • Collaborate with local schools, organizations, and community groups to enhance the reach of TMPF’s outdoor education and youth recreation programs.

Logistics and Administration:

  • Assist with camp logistics, including preparing materials, setting up and breaking down camps, and tracking attendance and feedback.

  • Contribute to camp evaluations and report on program success and areas for improvement.

Additional Duties as Assigned:

  • Engage in other TMPF programs and initiatives as needed, such as the Jr. Naturalists Program or other interpretive programs like Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Passionate about TMPF’s mission and commitment to healthy communities and outdoor recreation.

  • Strong interest in outdoor education, healthy living, and working with youth.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

  • Must be flexible, creative, and have a positive attitude when engaging with diverse groups of youth.

  • Ability to work with community partners, schools, and volunteers.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or some continuing education in education, nutrition, environmental science, or related fields.

  • Experience working with children or youth in informal educational settings (e.g., summer camps, after-school programs).

  • Experience in cooking or food education (particularly with youth).

  • Knowledge of nutrition and interest in promoting healthy food choices.

  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus.

  • First aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service.

  • Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent, or be enrolled in an institution of higher education.

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien.

  • Successfully pass the National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC) and National Sex Offender Program Registry check.

Compensation and Benefits

Living Allowance: $13,235 (for a half-term service of 920 hours).

Education Award: $3,697.50 upon successful completion of service.

Loan Forbearance: Eligible for loan forbearance on qualifying student loans.

Training & Professional Development: AmeriCorps members will receive training in outdoor education, nutrition, and community outreach, as well as opportunities to build leadership skills and gain professional experience.
